CSPI releases new resources for food donors

People who rely on the charitable food system both want and deserve nutritious food and beverages that support their health. Yet a 2018 report by MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger and the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity found that, on average, 25 percent of food bank distributions remain unhealthy. We conducted research to determine how federal and state governments can better leverage public policy to increase the amount of nutritious food and decrease the amount of unhealthy food donated to food banks.

The report calls for the U.S. Department of Agriculture to establish nutritional guidelines for its food distribution programs (the Emergency Food Assistance Program, the Commodity Supplemental Food Program, and the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations), additional states to support farm-to-food bank programs and implement organic waste bans, and offers other federal and state policy recommendations.
